MS Teams Auto Blocks Phishing Attempts

Safe Links, featured in Microsoft Defender for Office 365, provides URL scanning and rewriting of inbound emails and time-of-click verification of URLs and links in emails and other locations. Microsoft recently extended this feature to Teams in order to better protect users for URL-based phishing attempts.

Team's popularity in the past couple years has skyrocketed, specifically in the last 18 months since the COVID-19 pandemic began and employees transitioned to remote work.

"Safe Links in Defender for Office 365 scans URLs at the time of click to ensure that users are protected with the latest intelligence from Microsoft Defender", says Microsoft.

Safe Links protection, available to all Teams users, works for links in conversations, group chats and Teams channels. By default, there is no Safe Links policy enabled so users will need to create them in order to leverage this new protection. In order to do so, users will need to navigate to their Microsoft 365 Defender portal; see additional resource here.

Microsoft recently released their findings after a lengthy investigation into activity conducted by the Russian state-sponsored APT28 group using a unique tool for privilege escalation and credential harvesting on victim networks. Microsoft refers to the custom tool as GooseEgg and claim that the group has been observed leveraging this tool since at least June 2020. GooseEgg The custom toolset leverages CVE-2023-38208 in the Windows Print Spooler service which changes a JavaScript constraints file and executes it with SYSTEM permissions. Based on their findings, Microsoft believes GooseEgg is deployed after initial access to elevate access to targeted systems with the end goal of harvesting credentials and data.
